Neighborhood Speeding Complaints

Any observations of a serious nature should be reported by way of 911 immediately. General speeding or traffic signal violations on a particular street or area may be reported by way of this website. Please note any particular times or vehicle descriptions.

Officers use marked vehicles, hand-held lasers, motorcycles, and a speed trailer to monitor traffic for violations and officers are routinely assigned to targeted areas when identified.

WPD Patch Requests

We cannot provide our department patches to collectors or others that request same. It is impossible to accommodate these requests, especially lately as they have been coming in more frequently.

Please make no such requests to any division of our department. The channels these requests have been coming through are meant for providing public information and assistance.

The mission of the Willoughby Police Department shall be to provide a safe environment in which residents and non-residents can live and work. The Willoughby Police Department recognizes that it derives its authority from and is accountable to the community it serves. The Department will continually strive to provide effective and efficient police service consistent with the community’s needs and concerns. This mission shall be accomplished by the prompt but fair enforcement of the local and state laws. We believe the basic concerns of the citizens of Willoughby include a desire for peace, tranquility, and freedom from crime and disorder. We further believe that only through a coordinated police-community effort can public order and safety be achieved and sustained; therefore, we will actively encourage community support in a cooperative effort to achieve this mission.

Internet Crimes

Crimes like identity theft, financial fraud, sexual exploitation, child victimization, and terrorism are prevalent and are either committed via the internet or furthered through the use of the internet. While the Willoughby Police Department will accept a complaint if you are a victim, it is extremely difficult if not impossible in many cases to solve these crimes. The criminal is most often not in our area and in many cases lives outside the country. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has an internet crime complaint center which is a partnership of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center.

It is interesting to note that their 2007 statistics indicate that internet auction fraud was by far the most reported offense and comprised 44.9% of the referred complaints. Some tips they offer for avoiding internet auction fraud are:

Understand as much as possible about how the auction works, what your obligations are as a buyer, and what the seller’s obligations are before you bid.

Find out what actions the website/company takes if a problem occurs and consider insuring the transaction and the shipment.

Learn as much as possible about the seller, especially if the only information you have is an e-mail address. If it is a business, check the Better Business Bureau where the seller/business is located.

Examine the feedback of the seller.

Determine what method of payment the seller is asking from the buyer and where he/she is asking to send payment.

If a problem occurs with the auction transaction, it could be much more difficult if the seller is located outside the United States because of the difference in the laws.

Ask the seller about when the delivery can be expected and if there is a problem with the merchandise is it covered by a warranty or can you exchange it.

Find out if shipping and delivery are included in the auction price or are additional costs so there are no unexpected costs.

There should be no reason to give out your social security or driver’s license number to the seller.

Visit the FBI’s Internet Fraud division which contains very detailed information about common frauds, scams, and investment related scams, internet scams and fraud target scams to senior citizens. We are finding that many of the victims are sending large sums of money for a product to a post office box. It would be advisable to make sure that the address given is correct and also the phone number to be accurate of the seller. Sellers that do not provide this basic information that you can verify should not be dealt with.
